Eisenstein, Kuleshov and Vertov RE RE RE RESEARCH!!

Sergel Eisenstein

Eisenstein was a pioneer in the use of montage. He developed the 'Methods of montage'

1. Metric
2. Rhythmic
3. Tonal
4. Overtonal
5. Intellectual

In his early movies he avoided casting stars, instead using stock characters from the relevant classes to the characters in the film.

Lev Kuleshov

He is believed by many to be the first film theorist following his montage theory. Kuleshov loved the juxtaposition of images which has become known as the Kuleshov experiment. In this he would cut shots of actors with meaningful images in order to show how editing affects peoples interpretation of what they see.

Dziga Vertov

Vertov was a Soviet pioneer for documentary and cinema theories. His practices and theories have paved the way for Cinema verite documentary film making.

'Do I really need ...' (Treatment)

The story will be told through a fly on the wall documentary style and with a voice over narration.

The narration will give a brief introduction stating the study of VDU's so viewers know the aim behind the programme.

The show will then follow all 5 subjects and present how their life at hom and work differ without VDU's. There will also be times in the show when the subjects will talk directly to the camera and give their views on how easy or difficult they are finding the experiment.

For the conclusion of the programme the narrator will recap on the key parts of the show and discuss how each subject found the experiment.

There will then be a fade followed by the end credits.

Do I really need ... (Proposal)

My idea for the programme 'Do I really need ...' is centred around people's reliance on technology and especially VDU's.

Therefore my programme aims to show how people react when they can no longer use TV's, Computers, Phones and iPods. It can also be a study of how peoples culture, gender and profession affect their on VDU's. This can be achieved by making sure each subject in the programme differ from each other in some way. For example a 18 year old male will rely on VDU's differently than someone from an older generation.

The show will follow the format of a 'fly on the wall' documentary and will observe 5 individuals in their regular everyday lives and see how they react to not having VDU's.

The subject matters to me as I have a genuine reliance on VDU's for education and entertainment, but it will also be a throwback to days before technology such as TV's. I believe many viewers will also like an insight into what their life would be like without the VDU's.

Vox Pop research

Vox pops are utiized by most formats of media such as a radio and TV in order to give a snapshot of public opinion.

The term originates from the Latin 'vox populi' and means voice of the people.

It is supposed to be a completely random and spontaneous event, usually taking place in public areas where the subjects are asked questions on a subject, with the answers being used as a reflection of popular opinion.

Here are some examples of Vox pops.

Soccer AM are one of the few companies that will use vox pops for humour, often targeting the odder looking individuals in a public place. X Factor Also use vox pops to gather opinions on the acts, or when family and friends of the contestants deliver good luck messages in the latter rounds.

Research on soundscapes

We were given the task of studying soundscapes in preparation for our first assignment. It is aimed to give us a greater insight into the origins of soundscapes and give us an idea of the content. As it is my first time doing a soundscape it is essential I do this research before proceeding with the project.

Wikipedia defines soundscape as a combination of sounds that arise from an immersive environment, which could be a natural or man made area such as a city.

Raymond Murray Schafer believes there a 3 elements to a soundscape which are ...

1.) Keynote sounds
2.) Sound signals
3.) Soundmark

In order to create a successful soundscape, it is essential to use these 3 elements.

Here are some examples of soundscapes:

Both of these are very effective and give you a sense of the settings around you.

Do I Really Need ...

We were asked to come up with ideas for a show on BBC 3 which followed the structure 'Do I really need ...'. Being on BBC 3 we had to consider our target audience and shows which the viewers would find interesting.

We brainstormed ideas in class which produced ideas such as VUD's and Designer labels, as well as more in depth personal things such as responsibilities and washing.

I personally liked the idea of the VUD's as it is relevant to a modern society and more people are becoming reliant on things such as TV's and computers. I propose a competition format which means 5 individuals are placed in an area with no technology such as screens and mobile phones in a Big brother esc show. The emphasis would be more on how the individuals deal with having no VUD's as opposed to how they interact with each other.

Shift happens was a video which greatly inspired my idea as it is further evidence of how modern culture is changing to become more reliant on technologies that exist, and are still in production.

6 photos and a self portrait

For our next University assignment we were asked to produce 6 photographs of an area which created a certain atmosphere or mood. I decided to do this in the second section of my garden at home as it is a wild area and at Autumn has a number of different colours. In deciding to take the photos at dusk it meant it was darker outside and added to a sense of mystery.

For the self portrait element I decided to photograph objects which represent my personality and gives people an insight into my hobbies and interests. I also decided to take the photo on the angle so you could see the Liverpool crest of a poster I have in my room as it is a big part of my life
